Tri Gulf Coast offers a weekly open water swim with instruction by TriPossibilities Coaching for the 2023 season!

  • Friday swims will begin in April and will continue until the end of September.
  • Start time 6:30 OR when Sun peeks over horizon
  • Finish – 7:30 buoys are pulled and safety gear packed up
  • Check-in on TGC list Required (no text check-in this year)
  • Volunteers always welcome – for swim support/instruction
  • The Mere Mortals Page or TGC Page are the best places to check for any changes or cancellations due to weather and conditions.

  • This is a dedicated open water swim for members of Tri Gulf Coast.
  • We usually have 30-50 swimmers enjoying the sunrise and open water swimming.
  • Some individuals take the time to run or bike before or after, but these additional activities are SELF-SUPPORTED and not covered by the club in any way.

When is the TGC: Weekly Morning Open Water Swim?

  • Weather permitting, the swim takes place most Friday mornings through early October.
  • Check-in begins at 6:15 a.m.
  • Swimming begins at 6:30 a.m.
  • We generally swim for up to 1 hour.
  • The session is officially over when the buoys are pulled from the water.
  • The best place to check the status of the swim is on the official Facebook Event.

Where is the TGC: Weekly Morning Open Water Swim?

  • Friday’s morning swim location is typically at “Mommy Beach.”
  • This is the Sound Side beach that has a series of pavilions. There is no actual address to provide.
  • The closest businesses are Key Sailing and Hemmingways.
  • This photo shows the entrance to the parking lot. The pink building is the public restroom. The blue building is Key Sailing. Our normal meeting Pavilion is highlighted.
  • FROM THE TOLL BOOTHS: Continue south on Pensacola Beach Blvd. for about 1 mile. Turn LEFT into the parking lot. Shaggy’s Restaurant will be on the right side of the road (for reference).
  • We may move to the Gulf Side Pavilion at Casino Beach when conditions are favorable. ALWAYS check the Facebook Page for updates.

How far do you swim during the TGC: Weekly Morning Open Water Swim?

Photo: The typical Weekly Morning Swim path and distance options. There are two sets of buoys. A set at the short loop turn. A set at the long loop turn. At each set, you should be BETWEEN two buoys. Short loop, make a left turn. Long loop, make a right turn. We swim BACK along the OUTSIDE tracks.
  • While the workout can vary to include entry/exit practice, sighting, or speed drills there are typically two distance options.
  • One track takes swimmers through shallower water for a 200 yard length/400 yard loop.
  • Another track takes swimmers through deeper water for a 400 yard length/800 yard loop.
  • We generally swim for 45 minutes to 1 hour so swimmers can make as many or as few loops as they feel comfortable.
  • The session is officially over when the buoys are pulled from the water.

  • Swim conditions vary depending on the weather and wind.
  • It is common to see some chop, current, seaweed, fish, etc.
  • Extreme conditions and LIGHTNING can cause cancellation.
  • The best place to check the status of the swim is on the official Facebook Event.

What kind of swim support is available during the TGC: Weekly Morning Open Water Swim?

  • There is ALWAYS at least one dedicated person monitoring the swimmers from shore.
  • When conditions are conducive, there is also a paddle boarder in the water.

What kind of coaching is provided during the TGC: Weekly Morning Open Water Swim?

  • Any special instructions for the morning swim or swimming tips are covered during the safety brief before we hit the water.
  • Coaches from TriPossibilities Coaching are on-hand each week, hosting, coordinating, answering questions, and providing support during the Weekly Morning Swim.
